U.S. lawmakers introduce bills to facilitate wholesale importation of pharmaceutical products from Canada. Will Canada's pharmacy shelves run out of crucial medicines?
SHABBIR J. SAFDAR
Executive Director, Partnerships for Safe Medicines
Shabbir is passionate about patient safety. He leads the Partnership for Safe Medicines which focuses on researching the danger of counterfeit drugs in America.
New legislation in several US jurisdictions supports the importation of drugs from Canada. For the United States this creates loopholes that criminals may exploit to smuggle in counterfeit medicines.
Canada should not be the pharmacy of the United States. We have experienced significant drug shortages for over a decade. Shabbir will provide updates on this new US legislation while helping us determine what we can do in Canada to protect our supply chain.
